Opponents of educational freedom are attempting to take newfound hope away from Nebraska families. We need your help to protect school choice!
Just one month ago, historic school choice legislation (LB753, the Opportunity Scholarships Act) was signed into law. This law will be life-changing for thousands of Nebraska children who need better educational options. How do we know this? While Nebraska was the last state in the country to pass a school choice bill, other states have been successfully implementing school choice programs for over 30 years—and countless families testify to the impact of educational choice.
Unfortunately, there is already an effort to repeal this law, and your help is needed to ensure Nebraska parents—especially low-income parents—can choose the best education for their children.
LB753 empowers parents as the primary educator of their children. It helps low-income children, students being bullied and harassed, children in the foster care system, or students in military families. The Opportunity Scholarships Act embodies our Catholic commitment to the poor and vulnerable in our society, those who cannot access school choice. The current attempt to blockade families from this fundamental right could deny vulnerable students their one shot at a good education.
The Opportunity Scholarship Program prioritizes students in families at 100% of the poverty level, as well as students with “exceptional needs,” who have experienced bullying, in the foster system, in military families, or have been denied option enrollment by public schools.
LB753 allows income tax credits to incentivize donations to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs). The program provides a state income tax credit for donations to SGOs. Donations are made to SGOs, which then award scholarships to eligible children.
